About the Melksham Environment Group

The Melksham Environment Groups was formed in the Spring of 2024, originating with members of the Town Council's working group which had completed its work, and with the members looking forward to wider environmental issues and taking forward objectives set over a wider area. In late June and July, we helped organise and hosted a hustings for prospective members of Parliament, meeting most of the candidates at a very successful evening, including Brian Mathew who was duly electe as our MP.

The hustings were notable in our working with groups from other towns and villages across the constituency. The towns of Devizes, Bradford-on-Avon and part of Calne are all in the constituency and all were involved. Our group was very much the junior, but geographically central and in the area of greatest population. The hustings were also notable in that they were held at (and funded) indendently of the Town (and now Without) parishes from which we originated.

Objectives

The purposes of the Group is to educate, inform, inspire, involve and empower all those living, working or visiting the Melksham Community Area in averting, mitigating or adapting to, the Climate Crisis.

The group works on a partnership ethos and aims to fulfil its aims through and with the established community organisations such as (but not limited to) town, parish and unitary councils and their subgroups and committees within the Melksham Area. The group also works in close liaison with other ike minded groups in the wider parliamentary constituency and next tier authourity area in which we are located

The group plans to be a permanent contributor to its aims, updating as appropriate through avenues the commitee agrees. It may also arrange and join events that may be of interest to current and potential members and publish information about relevant events arranged by third parties.
